Feedback Loop: BLOXcast Edition

Feedback Loop (BLOXcast)We’re on a constant quest to address any and all feedback we receive from our community of gamers and developers. We couldn’t possibly respond to the thousands of questions and comments that poured in during last Saturday’s BLOXcast, so we thought we’d take this opportunity to respond to some of the great questions we couldn’t address live. In order to do so, we tapped a gamut of ROBLOX employees in varying departments to respond directly to your questions. Enjoy.

max792: Will you add light glare for dynamic lighting and the sun? Like light that blinds you when you look directly at the sun? I think this would enhance the realism of ROBLOX lighting–it could be a toggle-able option in the Game.Lighting object in Studio.

This January, Be a Winter Games Champion

As announced in Saturday’s BLOXcast livestream, we’ll be kicking off a worldwide gaming competition known as the ROBLOX Winter Games late this January! The competition will feature events created by some of the top ROBLOX game developers, and be powered by the now-in-development Universes, Teleports, and Data Persistence framework. That means there will be a social hangout leading to the various winter-themed events (each featuring prizes for top competitors) and a global leaderboard with aggregated results.

Build Bigger Than Ever Before

KingsLanding

When we released voxel terrain in 2011, we realized that creators had to adhere to a narrowly defined set of rules. As with any major release, we kept a steady ear to the ground and gathered as much feedback as possible to determine how to improve the feature make it a more viable and enjoyable tool for building. Though we’ll be updating the overall “look” or our terrain the coming months, infrastructural changes first had to be made to broaden the scope of terrain capabilities. We distilled your feedback into three significant improvements, each of which we’ve been working to address.

Spotlight: Treyreynolds’ Thrilling Gameplay Scripts

SpotlightTreyIf you’ve ever been high in the atmosphere on a plane or nearly touched the clouds in a sky-scraper, you might have found yourself pondering the idea–no, not acting on it–of jumping out and experiencing flight. You’re not the only one. We humans have dreamed of flight for generations, and have done everything from jumping out of planes to inventing rockets to experience the feeling. That’s a big reason why Air Physics, Skydiving and Flight by treyreynolds initially caught my eye (and the eyes of more than 200,000 other visitors, I should mention). In any other ROBLOX game, falling from great heights feels approximately the same. Treyreynolds wanted to change all that, so he scripted a complex air-physics script to do it. When I started to dig into what else treyreynolds has been doing around ROBLOX, I found some innovative stuff.

In Air Physics, Skydiving and Flight, you free fall through wide-open air with full control of your body on the way down. Standard movement controls apply, though hitting “w” to move “forward” during a free fall means you will fall faster (which is reflected visually by your body becoming much more rigid) and “s” will slow your fall (reflected by a sort of spread eagle position you’ve probably seen in skydiving videos). It’s a neat trick to be sure–I talked with treyreynolds about developing the system.
