Spotlight: Running for Our Lives With Erikwesley96

SpotlightDeathRun2Deathrun is a fan-favorite game in ROBLOX that has surged in popularity throughout the years. A few months ago, we talked with developer ErikWesley96 about designing Deathrun in a Crossfire article, where he mentioned that his team of developers (who still don’t have an official name, and are open to suggestions) was hard at work on crafting an official sequel. Fast forward a few months, and Deathrun 2 has not only officially released, but has been sitting at the top of the Games page for multiple weeks. I got the chance to talk with him about developing the Deathrun sequel from scratch.

“What surprised me most was that Deathrun 2 reached the front page without the use of ads of any kind,” recalls ErikWesley96. “I was expecting users to like it because the first Deathrun was loved by so many, but the popularity of the title really surprised me.”

Spotlight: Treyreynolds’ Thrilling Gameplay Scripts

SpotlightTreyIf you’ve ever been high in the atmosphere on a plane or nearly touched the clouds in a sky-scraper, you might have found yourself pondering the idea–no, not acting on it–of jumping out and experiencing flight. You’re not the only one. We humans have dreamed of flight for generations, and have done everything from jumping out of planes to inventing rockets to experience the feeling. That’s a big reason why Air Physics, Skydiving and Flight by treyreynolds initially caught my eye (and the eyes of more than 200,000 other visitors, I should mention). In any other ROBLOX game, falling from great heights feels approximately the same. Treyreynolds wanted to change all that, so he scripted a complex air-physics script to do it. When I started to dig into what else treyreynolds has been doing around ROBLOX, I found some innovative stuff.

In Air Physics, Skydiving and Flight, you free fall through wide-open air with full control of your body on the way down. Standard movement controls apply, though hitting “w” to move “forward” during a free fall means you will fall faster (which is reflected visually by your body becoming much more rigid) and “s” will slow your fall (reflected by a sort of spread eagle position you’ve probably seen in skydiving videos). It’s a neat trick to be sure–I talked with treyreynolds about developing the system.

Spotlight: A Bit of Everything with SONICTHEHEDGEHOGXX

SpotlightSonicTake a trip through Venezia sometime to ease your mind. There’s something calming about the aesthetic of the city that forces a grin every time you’re in it. No stranger to building mega titles on ROBLOX, SONICTHEHEDGEHOGXX has a lot on his plate. He’s in the process of rebuilding sections of Venezia, which has been sitting atop the Games Page in both “Top Paid” and “Top Earning” categories for at least a month, to give it a more modern look. He’s a prolific video editor who made “Out of BLOXY Cola,” which won a BLOXY award earlier in the year (and we still can’t figure out how he did certain parts). He’s also the Commander in Chief of the First Encounter Assault Recon (F.E.A.R), one of ROBLOX’s largest and most powerful groups at just over 140,000 members strong.

The point? He’s a busy guy. Which is why we appreciated the fact that he took the time to have a chat with us about managing so many large-scale projects, and find out what he’s got next in his seemingly never ending bag of ROBLOX tricks. First…

Spotlight: Taking Flight with BuilderAtWork

SpotlightBuilderAtWorkWhen you first join Avionic by BuilderAtWork, the chats you see are much more professional than what you probably expect from a multiplayer game. The majority of the people inside the game are communicating simple orders with one another. “Clear for takeoff.” “Lining up on runway.” “Landing in TNCM.” Not your typical ROBLOX chatter–though this isn’t your typical ROBLOX game. This is a full-blown flight simulation in a massive 3D world.

This is BuilderAtWork’s grand design–one that represents the accumulation of his years spent on ROBLOX designing different types of simulations. He’s only been working on this particular project for a month, and the game has already garnered a huge following. Because Avionic is still a work in progress, it’s not always open. Players wait patiently for the game to open just to experience the rush of taking a plane into the sky, as well as the equally difficult (if not moreso) task of actually landing it hundreds of miles away.

Spotlight: Starmarine614′s Theme Park Success Story

SpotlightStarmarine614We interviewed starmarine614 back in July, shortly after the introduction of Paid Access. We chatted with him because ROBLOX Point, which was still in beta at the time, was the first game to find significant success using the feature. We told him then to contact us when he was finished building his project, so I wasn’t surprised to get a message from him on ROBLOX a few days ago that read: “It’s finished, and it’s picture-ready.”

Calling ROBLOX Point “picture-ready” is a bit of an understatement, though not incorrect by any means. It’s beautiful. If you haven’t seen it yet, it’s a sprawling amusement park that features some of the most advanced roller coasters we’ve experienced on our platform. Like any good theme park, there are enough rides and attractions in ROBLOX Point to make a day of exploration an exciting prospect–though the rides are the primary selling point.

Spotlight: Oysi’s Wild ROBLOX Experiments

Spotlight_OysiWe knew when we first experienced Galaxy Wars that developer Oysi had something going, but that turned out to only be the tip of the iceberg that is his backlog of projects. Oysi is an interesting developer because he’s created several sort of “platforms” for games that focus on pushing the boundaries of what you can do with ROBLOX. Instead of focusing on one particular game, we decided to take a look at some of the creations (that’s plural) this intrepid developer has managed to build, and how he’s leveraged our platform to realize his grand visions.

Oysi has an impatient mind. He is constantly moving between projects–picking up and dropping new experiments at the drop of the hat. That’s because his experience with ROBLOX is constantly evolving–he is constantly learning new things and then finding ways to apply them to projects he’s already started. It’s an interesting give and take. The first game of his that caught our attention was Galaxy Wars, a space simulator with a very interesting control scheme and simulation of gravity.

Spotlight: REDALERT2, Creator of Sandbox

RedAlert2SpotlightSandbox is a truly unique title on ROBLOX–and as evidenced by its over 10 million plays, gamers and builders alike tend to agree. The goal of the game runs parallel to our foundation: build awesome things, and share them with your friends. REDALERT2‘s original idea was to create an environment where builders could create and be social with others, and even developed his own building tools tailor-made to be accessible by people of any skill level.

“It all started back in 2010. I remember ‘Blazing Man’, which was like the codename for the Welcome to ROBLOX Building game,” says REDALERT2. “I really got into the idea of putting basic blocks together to create things.”
