Responding to User Feedback, V8

Responding to User FeedbackEvery so often, we ask our users to let us know what they’d like to see in ROBLOX, then respond to some of the most insightful comments and pertinent questions. This time, John Shedletsky, ROBLOX’s Creative Director, solicited feedback via Twitter. He elaborates on a variety of topics, including a leveling system for ROBLOX, adding Robux or Tix to trades, messaging optimizations, a “stock market” and more. You can read previous entries in this ongoing series here.

Weekly ROBLOX Roundup: September 9, 2012

Weekly ROBLOX Roundup logoEvery week, we’re busy telling the stories behind our platform, our technology, and our place in the gaming and technology industries. For those of you who catch up with ROBLOX over the weekend, the Weekly ROBLOX Roundup collects the best stuff to hit our various avenues of publication in the last week. This time: our encounter with a 1-in-4-billion .NET bug, the very different ways several ROBLOX employees broke into the gaming industry, great video trailer submissions, a deep look at ROBLOX’s user-advertising infrastructure and more.

An unlikely occurrence

In July, one ROBLOX user unknowingly caused a bug, with roughly one-in-four-billion chances of occurring, that broke every Roblox.com page on which his character thumbnail appeared. If you want to know how a t-shirt cascaded into a site-wide bug (or if you have a penchant for numbers, odds, gambling and the like), you should read our blog post – it’s a fascinating view of our basic data structure and the volume of information we store.

But before we do that, we thought we’d take some time to explain how ROBLOX user ads work on a technical level.

The Basics

ROBLOX Discontinuing Support for Mac OS X 10.5

Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard

ROBLOX puts great effort into developing unified code that runs across multiple platforms – PC, Mac and soon iPad – on a wide variety of hardware and software configurations. This summer, as we ratcheted up development efforts for ROBLOX on mobile devices and tablets, we found the software we use to compile our code was only compatible with either Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) or mobile devices. We were faced with a tough decision: maintain a separate code base for OS X 10.5 or discontinue support for it.

ROBLOX Game Trailer Contest Showcase

On August 31st we launched a game trailer video contest (it’s not too late to enter – the submission deadline is Monday Sept 10th). There have been more than 200 entries so far, and many of them are fantastic. The staff is still going through submissions and we’re evaluating different methods for picking winners. Take a look at some of our early favorites (these videos have not won anything yet except for our admiration)…
