ROBLOX Hosting a Hackathon at Game Conference 2012

RGC 2012 Hackathon LogoDo you consider yourself an elite ROBLOX game designer? Do your friends secretly marvel at your architectural competence and scripting prowess? Can you produce under the pressure of limited time? If so, we invite you to bring your laptop to ROBLOX Game Conference 2012 and join us for a continuous, all-day Hackathon.

The ROBLOX Game Conference 2012 Hackathon will let attendees take a break from the festivities and enjoy a session of ROBLOX creation. Every 20 or so minutes, a ROBLOX developer will unveil a new puzzle, challenging users to complete it in a given period of time. While we can’t give away any specifics, we’ll be asking competitors to do things like create a new GUI (graphic user interface) or game effect, script a specific sequence of behaviors, solve programming and math puzzles, and take advantage of a ROBLOX feature that’s not commonly used.

The Water Is Running in ROBLOX

Pirate ShipWater has arrived in ROBLOX. What many see as an essential, but essentially mundane part of life, we see as a game-changer.

That’s because it’s more than just a texture. ROBLOX’s water comes with comprehensive physics simulation, meaning your ROBLOX character and the physical objects in your ROBLOX world behave as realistically in water as they do on land. You can wade on the surface and dive to the depths, create boats and motorized propellers, design rivers and falls with flowing rapids, and more. We’ve opened the floodgates to new genres of games and given game designers a new dynamic that begs experimentation.

ROBLOX Studio 2.0 Beta Out Now

ROBLOX Studio 2.0The public beta for ROBLOX Studio 2.0, the latest version of ROBLOX’s game-development application, is now available. You can download it here and give us your feedback on our Studio 2.0 forum. Please note that this beta is for Windows users only; ROBLOX Studio for Mac already uses our new framework and interface. Installing Studio 2.0 will not interfere with Studio 1.0, so you’ll be able to use both at the same time.

Your feedback is the most important part of this beta test. As you experiment with Studio 2.0, make specific, well documented notes that will help us identify areas that still need polish. The following points are a few relevant things to consider.

ROBLOX Studio 2.0 Nearing Public Beta Testing

ROBLOX Studio 2.0ROBLOX is pleased to announce the upcoming release of ROBLOX Studio 2.0, the application that lets you create, test and publish ROBLOX games. While Studio 2.0 features a cleaned-up and polished interface, we’re especially excited about the platform-independent framework on which we built it.

We currently maintain separate versions of ROBLOX Studio for PC and Mac. With Studio 2.0, we’re transitioning the PC version from a five-year-old, Microsoft-based framework to the modern, platform-independent framework we use for the Mac version. This not only means the user experience will be consistent across platforms, but also that, going forward, it’ll be easier for us to implement new features and maintain Studio 2.0’s functionality and usability standards. In short, we’ll be able to deliver features faster and wrap them in a better user experience.

Our Effort Against Phishing

With ROBLOX attracting more than 7 million unique visitors a month, we’ve started to see a rise in websites that “phish” for our users’ personal information. We’re taking serious measures to ensure these phishing sites don’t last. Remember: If an offer sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Anytime you enter your ROBLOX account information, check your browser’s address bar to make sure you’re on the real ROBLOX website.
