How the Top Earning Games Are Making ROBUX This Fall

Top Earning Games 11-2013It’s easy to get caught up in the “now” on ROBLOX. Every few days, there’s a new crop of popular and successful games – though only some have enough gameplay depth to maintain their chart-topping positions. But when you step back and look at ROBLOX from 30,000 feet and over the course of months rather than days, you start to see the trends and sweeping shifts of opinion. And at that point, you can draw conclusions about what’s fueling the fire – what’s working for developers and their players.

This is particularly fun in relation to game monetization, especially after the advent of the Developer’s Exchange. Now, being smart about monetizing your game can lead to real-world earnings – currently, if you accumulate 100,000 ROBUX, you can cash out for $100 U.S. dollars.

Economic Ideas: Scarcity, Popularity, Liquidity, and Volatility

Johnsbook11The ROBLOX economy is in constant motion, and many entrepreneurial-minded users have found methods to leverage it in order to turn significant profits. ROBLOX Creative Director John Shedletsky keeps a close eye on the economy, so we thought we’d tap him to see if he had any helpful advice he could share with those of you looking to dive into the market.

There is no guaranteed path to profit

There is no guaranteed way to profit from limited items on ROBLOX, so keep that in mind. If there were a 100% foolproof way to make ROBUX out of nothing, you can bet that a lot of fools would be doing it right now. The purpose of this article is to provide food for thought–it is not a get-rich-quick guide.

Price Floor: T-Shirts, Shirts, and Pants

Effective immediately ROBLOX is changing how clothing is priced. In the past users could charge whatever they wanted for clothing. We think it’s better for the economy as a whole to enforce a minimum price on these goods. Therefore, we’re instituting a price floor of 10 R$ for T-Shirts and 25 R$ for Shirts and Pants (or 12x this amount in tickets, which is slightly above current exchange rates as of the writing of this article). Users will be able to charge more than this at their option, but they will not be able to charge less if they choose to sell their clothing in the ROBLOX catalog.

The Games That Raked in Robux This Summer

Games Page ImageOn ROBLOX, content creators stand at a path to success that forks in myriad directions – from traditional building, coding and game development to more niche routes like film-making, character asset creation and advertising. What drives someone to succeed at any one thing is wholly individual, but many are fueled by the social capital and wealth that can stem from a great ROBLOX creation. In this article, we’re going to dive into games and worlds that have earned their creators both fame and riches using three features we’ve launched in the last year.

To start, let’s look at the games that have most effectively monetized players. These are the games that have earned the most Robux off of Game Passes, Affiliate Gear sales, and Paid Access. Making it this high in the rankings requires a blend of the right items at the right prices, and an underlying game that attracts players in the first place. This list dates back to May 1st and is current as of yesterday, September 9th.

Sell Game Passes and Gear in Your Game Today!

ROBLOX has had its own virtual economy since 2007 and, last year, we introduced two new features–Game Passes and Affiliate Gear Sales–that started to close the gap between the economy and building. We promised then that we’d eventually complete the circle and implement the ability for builders to sell items in-game. Today, after a lengthy public test in ROBLOX Battle, we’ve successfully enabled in-game transactions across all games in ROBLOX.

Builders can implement in-game sales by utilizing “MarketplaceService”, a new addition to ROBLOX’s Lua API. This new service features several useful aspects, the main one being the “PromptPurchase” function, which will allow you to prompt players to buy items in your games. Another useful aspect is the “GetProductInfo” function, which will allow you to see various stats of in-game sale items, including a description and cost of the item. We tested this API in ROBLOX Battle in the form of a store, though how you choose to implement the code is entirely your decision.

Trade All the Things! A Guide to the ROBLOX Trading System

Chart IllustrationAbout a week ago, we loosened up the ownership restrictions on limited items to allow users to possess multiple copies of the same item. One of the effects of this change is it is now much much easier to make trades with other players. In the past, if a player wanted to send me a trade, he would have to have items I didn’t already own. For a lot of our power users, this can be really difficult!

Since implementing this feature, I’ve personally seen my number of incoming trade offers triple. A quick look at the database confirms that there are now roughly 55% more trade offers flowing through our system. It’s been about eight months since we published our last guide to the Trading System. What better way to usher in the trading renaissance than to provide some tips and tricks for would-be traders?

Purchase and Trade Multiple Copies of Limited Items Today

Starting today, you can purchase and trade multiple copies of the same limited item. We’ve made this change to simplify our economy while simultaneously expanding it–in particular, it offers you much more flexibility when trading within the ROBLOX economy. Before we go into any more detail, keep this in mind: this doesn’t mean you can purchase multiple limited items from us, but you can purchase and trade multiple copies of the same item from other users.

We recognize that “item hoarding” is a talking-point among the community, though we don’t think this should be cause for concern. If you’re planning on going out and blowing 100,000 Robux on 100 copies of the same hat, we recommend rethinking that strategy. There’d be no value in it–the market mechanics of supply and demand would make it difficult to resell those hats at a profit.
