A few weeks ago, ROBLOX launched a promotion to raise awareness of its impending mobile app release: at random times throughout each day, we put an extremely limited virtual ROBLOX Tablet on sale in the Catalog. Users who own one of these rare tablets when ROBLOX Mobile officially debuts will receive brand new iPad 3s from ROBLOX.
Since we released the tablets, we’ve been monitoring trade activity to see which users purchased them. We were curious to see how many users would simply keep them (to win an iPad), and how many would leverage them to trade for other rare items. Though not every user who got a ROBLOX Tablet chose to flip it, some did–and for some valuable virtual items.

Our Catalog has undergone many changes over the years, and we continue to develop it so it’s easier to use, navigate and ultimately find the gear you need for your ROBLOXian. Today, an overhaul of the Catalog launched on Roblox.com, bringing new functionality and a better user experience to shopping on ROBLOX.
Powered by Solr, an open-source search platform, our new Catalog’s search engine is more robust than ever before. We took advantage of wide-table search, a touted feature of Solr, and included new search filters, including extra pricing options, genres, gear categories and creators. The new gear category filter allows users to to search gear by type (i.e., “melee weapons” or “explosives”), and the new creator filter allows users to see what kind of models and items ROBLOX users are creating.

The ROBLOX Catalog features a vast array of items. Some exist to make you look really, really good; others for the sake of helping you outsmart, outmaneuver and overpower your opponents. Of course, with so much gear to browse, it can be tough to find a good point of entry. We’ve compiled two lists, comprising 10 of the most popular items in the Catalog, with some details into the underlying code that powers them.

The Black Hole Bomb is a unique piece of gear that, upon detonation, pulls all objects in a radius toward it. It does so by applying a BodyPosition object to all parts within a radius of 50 studs, then removes its forces after 10 seconds.
