The Water Is Running in ROBLOX

Pirate ShipWater has arrived in ROBLOX. What many see as an essential, but essentially mundane part of life, we see as a game-changer.

That’s because it’s more than just a texture. ROBLOX’s water comes with comprehensive physics simulation, meaning your ROBLOX character and the physical objects in your ROBLOX world behave as realistically in water as they do on land. You can wade on the surface and dive to the depths, create boats and motorized propellers, design rivers and falls with flowing rapids, and more. We’ve opened the floodgates to new genres of games and given game designers a new dynamic that begs experimentation.

ROBLOX Studio 2.0 Beta Out Now

ROBLOX Studio 2.0The public beta for ROBLOX Studio 2.0, the latest version of ROBLOX’s game-development application, is now available. You can download it here and give us your feedback on our Studio 2.0 forum. Please note that this beta is for Windows users only; ROBLOX Studio for Mac already uses our new framework and interface. Installing Studio 2.0 will not interfere with Studio 1.0, so you’ll be able to use both at the same time.

Your feedback is the most important part of this beta test. As you experiment with Studio 2.0, make specific, well documented notes that will help us identify areas that still need polish. The following points are a few relevant things to consider.

How to Build a FPS in 15 Minutes with ROBLOX

ROBLOX FPS ScreenshotBy the time the ROBLOX Content Team finished developing ROBLOX Base Wars FPS, we had accumulated a number of powerful scripts that quickly turn a standard ROBLOX game into a class-based, first-person shooter (FPS). Recognizing the power of the scripts, we packaged them in a FPS plugin for ROBLOX Studio and put them to the test.

Do they make it possible to create an FPS in 15 minutes?

The answer is a resounding yes. If you don’t believe it, watch this video, in which ROBLOX’s own Luke Weber and Rohan Karnik go from nothing to a fully functioning FPS game in 15 minutes. (We’ve edited the video for brevity.)

Responding to User Feedback, V4

ROBLOX Player in ThoughtEver since we made the request for your ROBLOX “Top Three,” we’ve been combing through the feedback and responding to your most insightful comments and pertinent questions. This week, John Shedletsky, ROBLOX’s Creative Director and Content Lead, elaborates on a variety of topics, including non-player character (NPC) functionality, scripting tutorials and environments, character “outfits,” particle effects and more.

madscientist42: More NPC functionality – walking destination, backpack, target, alliance – would allow games to always have enough players for a specific objective and/or make RPGs a whole lot more fun. (For example, instead of walking to a NPC that stands still, perhaps the NPC journeys with you.)

Join ROBLOX for a Network Performance Playtest Today at 4:30 PST

We at ROBLOX ultimately want all of our users to be able to create anything they imagine: everything from fast, competitive games to massive, detailed structures, and have them all run silky-smooth. As part of this grand vision, the ROBLOX Content Team recreated a classic level, Longest Yard (DM17), from a classic game, Quake 3. It’s a one-to-one copy, built in the ROBLOX engine. We’re going to use it to compare ROBLOX’s in-game performance with that of the tested-and-true Quake Live. If you aren’t familiar with Quake, it’s a first-person shooter series characterized by its fast pace, capacity for acrobatic maneuvers, and best-in-class networked performance.
