If you are developing a scripting language, it turns out that allowing clients to load and execute arbitrary bytecode is a really bad idea. Lua, the embedded scripting language that ROBLOX uses, unfortunately allows this by default. After some deliberation, we decided to remove this capability from ROBLOX Lua.

The public beta for ROBLOX Studio 2.0, the latest version of ROBLOX’s game-development application, is now available. You can download it here and give us your feedback on our Studio 2.0 forum. Please note that this beta is for Windows users only; ROBLOX Studio for Mac already uses our new framework and interface. Installing Studio 2.0 will not interfere with Studio 1.0, so you’ll be able to use both at the same time.
Your feedback is the most important part of this beta test. As you experiment with Studio 2.0, make specific, well documented notes that will help us identify areas that still need polish. The following points are a few relevant things to consider.
Continue reading We at ROBLOX ultimately want all of our users to be able to create anything they imagine: everything from fast, competitive games to massive, detailed structures, and have them all run silky-smooth. As part of this grand vision, the ROBLOX Content Team recreated a classic level, Longest Yard (DM17), from a classic game, Quake 3. It’s a one-to-one copy, built in the ROBLOX engine. We’re going to use it to compare ROBLOX’s in-game performance with that of the tested-and-true Quake Live. If you aren’t familiar with Quake, it’s a first-person shooter series characterized by its fast pace, capacity for acrobatic maneuvers, and best-in-class networked performance.

Last year’s ROBLOX Game Conference – ROBLOX Rally 2011 – had one thousand attendees. We would like to double (or more) the number of users attending this year. We are announcing the event as early as possible so users have time to make summer travel plans. This year’s event will be similar in format to ROBLOX Rally 2011, with more of everything that was great – more demos, more computers, more learning, more ROBLOX. We are tentatively calling the event “ROBLOX Game Conference 2012″ but will finalize the name when tickets go on sale soon.
The Conference will be held on Saturday July 14, 2012 at the Santa Clara Convention Center, conveniently located near dozens of hotels and next to the themed amusement park Great America. We will explore discount Great America tickets for those who wish to visit the day after the conference.
