ROBLOX’s Content Team has been hard at work as of late creating Game Templates, which are freely available starter levels with the nuts and bolts of a specific genre already in place. Our first template gives you the basic elements you need to build a game of the popular multiplayer shooter variety, Capture the Flag. The ROBLOX Catalog features a vast array of items. Some exist to make you look really, really good; others for the sake of helping you outsmart, outmaneuver and overpower your opponents. Of course, with so much gear to browse, it can be tough to find a good point of entry. We’ve compiled two lists, comprising 10 of the most popular items in the Catalog, with some details into the underlying code that powers them.

The Black Hole Bomb is a unique piece of gear that, upon detonation, pulls all objects in a radius toward it. It does so by applying a BodyPosition object to all parts within a radius of 50 studs, then removes its forces after 10 seconds. During our annual Hack Week, ROBLOX developers shifted gears, working tirelessly to devise and present ideas fueled more by creativity than priority. This week, we’ll be featuring some of the most innovative ideas to come out of Hack Week. Our second story is about some changes that will be implemented to ROBLOX’s robust GUIs (graphical user interfaces), by Software Engineers Deepak Chandrasekaran and Tyler Mullen.

The ROBLOX Catalog features a number of swords that deal huge damage and, in some cases, carry additional properties. ROBLOX is built on a comprehensive physics engine, and our developers are constantly optimizing it so it can handle interactions between more physics objects and players, in an increasingly accurate and consistent way. We recently put our engine to the test with a new projectile-motion simulator – and most satisfying armament – the ROBLOX Potato Cannon. According to the results, which we describe in this article, we’re on the right trajectory.
The ROBLOX Potato Cannon mimics its real-world counterpart, a contraption traditionally constructed using a pipe and some means of generating air pressure. The difference is our potato cannon automatically performs the calculations you need to hit your target. We constructed the potato cannon so it computes the launch angle and, with the velocity at a constant 300 studs/second, the correct trajectory for your now-deadly potato. If your target is outside its range, it defaults to the maximum distance it can shoot.
