Behind the Scenes with the Games Team: The Making of Gear

The ROBLOX Games Team is in a constant race against time–it’s their job to ensure that our builders have more gear to browse through in the Catalog each and every week, among other things. This is an extremely organized, frantic, and often fun process that is constantly in motion. We thought we’d spend some time with the Games Team to watch and document how gear is made–from planning and brainstorming, to animating and scripting, to release.

Group Dynamic: Competition Bubbling Beneath the Surface

groupdynamic

As is the case with ROBLOX developers, we blog curators listen to our readers’ feedback and try to produce content that interests you. We’ve long been asked to better represent the world of ROBLOX Groups, and today we’re launching a series to do just that. Group Dynamic will be dedicated to reporting on and engaging with groups of all sorts and sizes. For this, the inaugural entry in the series, we’ve chosen to focus on the competition that occurs between groups–intense rivalries, training, patrols and raids that are unfolding all hours of every day. We talked with members of all sorts of groups, big and small. We participated in surprise raids and fought alongside (and in some cases, against) groups of all sizes and abilities.

Spotlight: Oysi’s Wild ROBLOX Experiments

Spotlight_OysiWe knew when we first experienced Galaxy Wars that developer Oysi had something going, but that turned out to only be the tip of the iceberg that is his backlog of projects. Oysi is an interesting developer because he’s created several sort of “platforms” for games that focus on pushing the boundaries of what you can do with ROBLOX. Instead of focusing on one particular game, we decided to take a look at some of the creations (that’s plural) this intrepid developer has managed to build, and how he’s leveraged our platform to realize his grand visions.

Oysi has an impatient mind. He is constantly moving between projects–picking up and dropping new experiments at the drop of the hat. That’s because his experience with ROBLOX is constantly evolving–he is constantly learning new things and then finding ways to apply them to projects he’s already started. It’s an interesting give and take. The first game of his that caught our attention was Galaxy Wars, a space simulator with a very interesting control scheme and simulation of gravity.

ROBLOX Staff: Game Developers by Day, Gamers by Night

gamecomp

We all share a passion for gaming and game development here at ROBLOX. While we pour our energy into making our platform more robust and feature-rich every day, many of us also seek inspiration and entertainment from the wider games industry in our free time. We thought we’d check in with some of our gaming enthusiasts to find out what’s happening outside of ROBLOXia and offer a little insight into our tastes.

Crossfire: TheGamer101 & Loleris Talk Sword Fighting

crossfireswordsCreativity and sharing are two qualities that fuel ROBLOX, and it’s in that spirit that we created Crossfire, a series where we chat with ROBLOX game developers about their game design choices. For this outing, we interviewed users TheGamer101 and loleris, creators of Sword Fighting Tournament and Intense Sword Fighting, respectively. Both games focus on strategic (surprise!) sword fighting–though that’s where the similarities end. With the recent upswing in popularity of Intense Sword Fighting (the game is just over a week old), this Crossfire article was a no-brainer.

ROBLOX: Thanks for being a part of this guys! There seems to be a real feud going on between your two games. What was your strategy in promoting your game and making it popular?

Spotlight: REDALERT2, Creator of Sandbox

RedAlert2SpotlightSandbox is a truly unique title on ROBLOX–and as evidenced by its over 10 million plays, gamers and builders alike tend to agree. The goal of the game runs parallel to our foundation: build awesome things, and share them with your friends. REDALERT2‘s original idea was to create an environment where builders could create and be social with others, and even developed his own building tools tailor-made to be accessible by people of any skill level.

“It all started back in 2010. I remember ‘Blazing Man’, which was like the codename for the Welcome to ROBLOX Building game,” says REDALERT2. “I really got into the idea of putting basic blocks together to create things.”
