Crossfire: Gusmanak and DeadzoneZack Talk Game Design

Creativity and sharing are two qualities that fuel ROBLOX, and it’s in that spirit that we introduce Crossfire, a new series where we chat with ROBLOX game developers about their design choices and other ROBLOX topics. For our very first segment, we talked with developers Gusmanak and DeadzoneZackZak, both of whom have created go-to games for ROBLOX zombie survivalists–Apocalypse Rising and Deadzone. Combined, the two uber-popular titles have been played nearly 10 million times. The games have stood the test of time because they are constantly being enhanced and upgraded by their creators.

ROBLOX: Apocalypse Rising seems to be the more open game. You can wander around for quite some time without seeing anybody. In Deadzone it’s much easier to find people. Was this a conscious decision on your end?

The Success and Making of the 2013 ROBLOX Egg Hunt

The ROBLOX 2013 Egg Hunt has become the most popular event we’ve ever thrown on our platform. We thought we’d take some time to share some of the staggering numbers the game has accumulated in the last week (nearly 2.5 million players and 20,000 concurrent players!)–both in terms of users playing, and the amount of eggs collected. We also got the chance to sit and talk with three of the key architects behind the Egg Hunt, who shared some of the challenges of undertaking such a massive endeavor.

Spotlight: Juliane14 and Group ITA Recreate Rome

As soon as I spawn into City of Rome, Italia, there’s a person waiting for me in some sort of militaristic get up. The stranger walks up to me and says, “where can I take you sir?” I’ve never been called “sir” in ROBLOX before, but I shrug that thought off. I tell him I’m here to see Juliane14, the creator of this place. “Right away, sir”, he fires back. We jump in a faded brown car and hit the freeway toward the capitol (within a capitol) of Rome.

Well, not the real capitol. The capitol we’re heading to is a massive fictitious building with a big red stripe running around it, and I’m told that Juliane14 is in it. Upon arriving, my former chaueffer tells me to go ahead inside, and instructs other uniformed ROBLOXians to guard me, which they do.

Presenting The Winners of the Egg and Face Design Contests

A few weeks ago we launched several fan art contests, where we asked our artistically inclined users to submit egg textures for the upcoming and wildly popular ROBLOX Egg Hunt, and users to create their own ROBLOX faces–the prize being a 2,500 Robux payday. We received a ton of creative submissions, and have officially chosen winners in both categories.

Winners: ROBLOX Egg Retexture Contest

We received over a thousand entries, and there were way too many cool designs to pick just two winning eggs. So we chose three regular eggs, and three Fabrege eggs to add to our 2013 ROBLOX Egg Hunt. We’ll be posting info about the 2013 ROBLOX Egg Hunt early next week, so keep your eyes peeled.

Spotlight: Unprecedented Place Detail With TacoConsumer

Every now and again, we like to show you some awesome places in ROBLOX you’ve probably never seen before. It’s a joy jumping into these virtual worlds, and bearing witness to stunning vistas and huge castles and…a busted up office building? Wait, what?

I blame sentiment for Derelict Office catching my eye—I couldn’t shake the fact that it looked like Half-Life 2, a game I fondly remember playing on my dad’s self-modded desktop PC. Though it’s kind of small, the Derelict Office has features and objects that you just don’t normally see on ROBLOX.
