A Retrospective Look at BLOXcon Chicago

bloxcon2I imagine I’ll update this article sporadically as I write it. Right now, I’m hovering at 40,000 feet in the air between time zones, making it impossible to know exactly what time it actually is. It’s early. I’m traveling back to California at approximately 537 miles per hour (thanks for the useful info, United in-flight magazine!), and am nodding off occasionally. I am exhausted. In a good way.

You see, the 2013 version of BLOXcon is something we’ve never done before. We’ve had conventions, sure. Last year’s ROBLOX Game Conference here in the Bay Area was a blast, and a success! But it was practically down the road; this year, we’re traveling to three cities, all thousands of miles away. And if our time spent in Chicago was any indication, we’re a third of the way through one heck of a journey.

BLOXcon Chicago: The Day in Pictures

P1000451Greetings from BLOXcon Chicago! It’s been a huge day for the ROBLOX staff — whether we were manning booths, running contests, giving keynote presentations on stage or running the Hackathon. Now, as the event slowly draws to an end, we wanted to share some photos we took throughout the day. And don’t worry, there’s a lot more to come. We made some very exciting announcements and showed off some awesome new features coming down the pipeline. We also documented the entire event on video with three (!!!) separate devices, so we’ll have plenty of footage to show you in the coming days and at the Virtual BLOXcon this September.

For now, enjoy this photo gallery of pictures. And thanks to the wonderful people of Chicago — your ideas, feedback, and overall positive enthusiasm really brought this event to life, and inspired us to keep doing it. London, bring it on!

A Look at BLOXcon Chicago’s Community-run Booths

BLOXcon Chicago LogoIn less than a week, we’re going to be packing up, boarding a plane headed for Chicago and setting up the first of this summer’s BLOXcons. But we’re not the only ones coordinating a presence at the Museum of Science and Industry; several members of the ROBLOX community will be on-site to spread the word about their organizations, products and events. Read on to find out what will be on display (and to get prepared for an awesome BLOXcon experience).

First off, a look at what’s going on at BLOXcon

Main Stage Presentation: CEO and ROBLOX Co-Founder David Baszucki and VP of Marketing and Brand Experience Brad Justus will lead a two-hour presentation covering a gamut of ROBLOX news and developments. We’ll showcase new ROBLOX features, give a bunch of awards, do an on-stage interview with celebrity ROBLOXian Merely, and more!

BLOXcon Is Coming! Which Staff Will be Where?

With this summer’s BLOXcon happening only two weeks from now in Chicago, we thought it would be a good idea to tell you which of your favorite ROBLOX admins will be at which location (we can’t all go to all three, we have jobs to do here at HQ). In addition, we thought we’d put together a quick video teaser for BLOXcon Chicago, which is taking place at the Museum of Science and Industry.

A Look at the BLOXcon Main Stage Presentation

BLOXcon Fedoras

It’s been a little while since we revealed any details about our fast-approaching BLOXcons – so today, we’re going to reveal the projected program for our Main Stage Presentation. Preview the 2013 BLOXY Awards

BLOXY 2013 AwardWith the excitement of the submission and voting periods now in the books, we have selected — with public opinion as a significant factor — the nominees for each category of the ROBLOX International Film Festival. As promised, we will be announcing the actual winners for each category at the upcoming BLOXcon Chicago, London and New York City. Winners will have their films screened in front of a live BLOXcon audience and highlighted on the ROBLOX YouTube channel, and receive a coveted BLOXY Award!

We don’t want to kill the suspense and anticipation of the actual announcements, so we’re not going to show the nominees for every category. However, we do have a bundle of potential winners for the popular machinima/short film and trailer categories to share. All nominees are listed in a random order. Grab a snack and settle in for some great works of ROBLOX cinema!

Presenting the Winners of the BLOXcon Poster Contest

Poster Contest GraphicIn the ROBLOXian spirit of creativity and participation, we decided not to make our own posters for the fast-approaching BLOXcon, but leave it in the hands of our community. We received almost 300 (requirement-meeting) posters over the course of a 10-day submission period, and today are announcing the winners and runners up for each BLOXcon — Chicago, London and New York City. Congratulations in advance to all the winners and a big, blocky thank you to everyone who participated in the competition.

As promised, all three winners will receive three fantastic prizes: distribution of their printed poster to all BLOXcon attendees, a signed copy from the ROBLOX admins, and an exclusive virtual item (details forthcoming). And, because of the quality of the submissions, we’ll also give the virtual exclusive to the two runners up for each category.
