Members of Team Rudimentality Talk Strobe Game Development

Sometimes we stumble across a user creation that elicits a double-take, a squint, and a what-is-that? moment. Such was the case when we first laid our eyes on Strobe, a game in early development from Team Rudimentality. Working here, I’d like to think I’ve seen my fair share of different looking titles. But this easily took the cake. Check out the screenshots below, but do yourself a favor and play the game to see it in motion. Strobe has “innovation” written all over it.

The first thing you’ll immediately notice about Strobe is the eye-popping visuals, which are sure to be even more attention-grabbing with dynamic lighting–something the team has already tinkered with (more on this later). The overall look of game reminded me of Tron. The majority of the game is coated in blacks and dark shades of gray, which is in direct contrast to the glowing dramatic yellow and blue lines that cover the maps and parts of players.

Developer’s Journal: Crazyman32′s Sequel to Perilous Skies

Last week, we encouraged users to send in their ideas for blog articles. We received a wealth of submissions and have already started working with a few potential authors on articles that leverage their unique expertise’. Crazyman32 is a name which which we’re sure you’re familiar. Creator of Perilous Skies and overall ROBLOX innovator, crazyman32 jumped at the chance to write about the design and development of Perilous Skies: New Horizons, the official sequel to his popular ROBLOX title.

First, a quick word:

ROBLOX has always been medium to allow me to let my creativity flow freely. I express myself through the art of game making—a skill I am always working on improving. During my time on ROBLOX, I’ve managed to create some games that have been favored among the community. Perilous Skies, a game that thrusts you into the cockpit of a fighter jet to fight off enemies with homing missiles and machine guns, is my favorite creation. Unfortunately unsafe programming practices, like implementing many preliminary features that have since changed, has caused my favorite title to fall from the soaring heights it once reached. This didn’t discourage me in the least; it inspired me to begin work on my newest title, Perilous Skies: New Horizons.

Sell Game Passes and Gear in Your Game Today!

ROBLOX has had its own virtual economy since 2007 and, last year, we introduced two new features–Game Passes and Affiliate Gear Sales–that started to close the gap between the economy and building. We promised then that we’d eventually complete the circle and implement the ability for builders to sell items in-game. Today, after a lengthy public test in ROBLOX Battle, we’ve successfully enabled in-game transactions across all games in ROBLOX.

Builders can implement in-game sales by utilizing “MarketplaceService”, a new addition to ROBLOX’s Lua API. This new service features several useful aspects, the main one being the “PromptPurchase” function, which will allow you to prompt players to buy items in your games. Another useful aspect is the “GetProductInfo” function, which will allow you to see various stats of in-game sale items, including a description and cost of the item. We tested this API in ROBLOX Battle in the form of a store, though how you choose to implement the code is entirely your decision.
