ROBLOX Studio 2.0 Nearing Public Beta Testing

ROBLOX Studio 2.0ROBLOX is pleased to announce the upcoming release of ROBLOX Studio 2.0, the application that lets you create, test and publish ROBLOX games. While Studio 2.0 features a cleaned-up and polished interface, we’re especially excited about the platform-independent framework on which we built it.

We currently maintain separate versions of ROBLOX Studio for PC and Mac. With Studio 2.0, we’re transitioning the PC version from a five-year-old, Microsoft-based framework to the modern, platform-independent framework we use for the Mac version. This not only means the user experience will be consistent across platforms, but also that, going forward, it’ll be easier for us to implement new features and maintain Studio 2.0’s functionality and usability standards. In short, we’ll be able to deliver features faster and wrap them in a better user experience.

Behind the ROBLOX Booth at Maker Faire 2012

ROBLOX and Maker Faire LogosIf I had to sum up Maker Faire Bay Area 2012 in 10 words, I’d say, “a little bit of everything, nothing run-of-the-mill.” Last weekend, the San Mateo County Event Center was packed with DIY creators, tech companies, schools and organizations, showing projects from 3D printing – oddly captivating to watch – six-legged robots and hacked devices to world-record paper airplanes and armed garden gnomes.

For the record, that excludes all the stuff that required too much space to fit in a building – the giant dinosaur covered in speakers, the pedal-powered music stage and the mutated bicycles, to name a few.

ROBLOX Office ConferenceEver since we made the request for your ROBLOX “Top Three,” we’ve been combing through the feedback and responding to your most insightful comments and questions. This week, John Shedletsky, ROBLOX’s Creative Director and Content Lead, elaborates on a variety of topics, including camera properties, aerodynamics, new terrain, an “animation studio” and more. Check out v1 and v2 for more.

ErrorlessRBLX: Aerodynamics – I want to be able to build an airplane using certain shaped bricks, and when I apply force to it, the wings generate thrust. The more forward force, the greater the thrust (depending on wing types).

Sneak Peek: Trading System

Trade System ScreenshotThe time is nigh! One of the most anticipated ROBLOX features is nearing completion. Beta testing of the trading system will begin within the next few weeks. As many of our more economically inclined users know, it can be difficult to exchange items with one another when all of an account’s equity is locked away in assets. This is especially true for rare and high value items. The Trading System will allow Builders Club members to exchange limited items with one another without needing to have cash on hand.
