Rendering Changes and Improved Performance Are Coming Soon

Next week, we’ll be releasing new rendering code that will boost performance by up to 3X, enabling more people to play games that have tens of thousands of parts. Part of the performance boost will stem from turning off bevels, which round the corners of bricks. The rest will come from featherweight parts and fast parts technology applying to ROBLOX parts of all shapes, sizes and materials, and a dynamic quality adjustment sensor that automatically adjusts material quality based on your hardware. The following video demonstrates the performance differences in a place that has over a hundred thousand parts.

Come Meet ROBLOX at GDC 2013

GDC 2013 LogoThere’s been a buzz within the game industry — ROBLOX HQ included — over the past few days’ lead-up to Game Developers Conference 2013, which kicked off today in San Francisco. The self-proclaimed largest and longest-running professionals-only game industry event brings together programmers, artists, producers, game designers, audio professionals, business decision-makers and others involved in game development to exchange ideas and shape the future of the industry.

ROBLOX will be manning a booth at GDC 2013 from Wednesday through Friday. Our primary focus will be meeting potential candidates to join the ROBLOX team, but we’ll also be there to talk technology and demonstrate cross-platform gameplay with our internally developed ROBLOX Battle game running on laptops and iPads. We’d love to have you stop by and learn more about us over a rousing round of frantic fragging and physically simulated destruction. If you have serious skills, you can enter one of our daily tournaments for a chance to win an Amazon gift card.

Weekly ROBLOX Roundup: March 24th, 2013

Weekly ROBLOX Roundup Logo, V2Every week, we’re busy telling the stories behind our platform, our technology and our place in the gaming and technology industries. For those of you who catch up with ROBLOX over the weekend, the Weekly ROBLOX Roundup collects the best stuff to hit our various avenues of publication in the last week. This time: a preview of the 2013 ROBLOX Egg Hunt, our Spotlight on TacoConsumer‘s detailed building style, stress testing the ROBLOX physics engine, a new beta test for multiple-limited-item ownership, quite possibly the most detailed vehicle interior ever built in ROBLOX, and other bits and pieces. Enjoy.

Seven-day Blog Recap

Egg Hunt ScreenshotThe ROBLOX event of the year is almost here…

Each year, our annual Egg Hunt becomes bigger and more creative than ever before. We’ve got some really cool plans in store for the 2013 installment of this fan-favorite event, and we’ll be revealing all the details when the game launches the week of the 25th. Presenting The Winners of the Egg and Face Design Contests

A few weeks ago we launched several fan art contests, where we asked our artistically inclined users to submit egg textures for the upcoming and wildly popular ROBLOX Egg Hunt, and users to create their own ROBLOX faces–the prize being a 2,500 Robux payday. We received a ton of creative submissions, and have officially chosen winners in both categories.

Winners: ROBLOX Egg Retexture Contest

We received over a thousand entries, and there were way too many cool designs to pick just two winning eggs. So we chose three regular eggs, and three Fabrege eggs to add to our 2013 ROBLOX Egg Hunt. We’ll be posting info about the 2013 ROBLOX Egg Hunt early next week, so keep your eyes peeled.

Beta Testing Now: Own and Trade Multiple Copies of Limited Items

We’re always looking for ways to make the ROBLOX economy more flexible and dynamic. In the past year, we’ve introduced and enhanced our trading system, added affiliate gear sales and game passes, and created a group treasury, among other things. Today, we’re kicking off a beta test for yet another economy feature: the ability to purchase and trade multiple copies of the same limited item.

Physics Performance Demo: Domino Stress Test

As you may recall, we recently published an in-depth article about how we’ve sped up ROBLOX’s physics by 2-4x as a result of modeling collisions using impulses rather than springs. The “impulse solver,” together with three recent bug fixes, has drastically improved the performance and realism of one of our favorite physics-engine stress tests: Ultimate Dominoes! by armitroner. In this test, a single force cascades through thousands of standing parts, causing them to topple in quick succession.
