Tips for Submitting a Successful Film Fest Entry

The submission phase of the ROBLOX International Film Festival is in full swing! During the first two weeks, ROBLOX builders have submitted more than 200 films, and many of them are undoubtedly capable of earning a coveted BLOXY Award. But don’t let that dissuade you; there are still two more weeks to submit and the weekend is imminent. It’s a perfect time to get started on your own film.

Those of you who didn’t swoop in and enter right away actually have an advantage: you can see what categories are stacked with competition and what categories remain thin. For instance, we’ve received a lot of ROBLOX machinima and commercials, but a relatively small number of city-specific films and physics/building showcases. If you want to improve your odds of getting noticed, produce a film that falls under a category with fewer entries. Create a city-specific film that shows the essence of Chicago, London or New York City within ROBLOX. Capture footage of yourself building something cool and intricate, then speed up the footage so we can see the whole process.

The ROBLOX Film Festival Is Now Accepting Submissions!

I hope the dynamic lighting video contest got you all the in the mood to create masterpieces of ROBLOX cinema because, starting today, the real challenge begins: the ROBLOX International Film Festival 2013 is now accepting submissions. Winning entries will receive not only a prestigious BLOXY Award, but a live screening on the main stage at one of this summer’s BLOXcons and a highly visible spot on the ROBLOX YouTube channel!

After a weekend of voting and a couple days of internal deliberation, we’ve narrowed the pool of more than 200 dynamic lighting video contest submissions to the top 10. Because the quality is so high across the board, we’ve also decided to give the creators of all 10 submissions the “Master of Light and Darkness” top hat and placement on the ROBLOX YouTube channel!

The Vote Is On! Choose Your Favorite Dynamic Lighting Video

Last week, we enabled dynamic lighting on GameTest1, a testing environment for new releases of ROBLOX gameplay and ROBLOX Studio. In conjunction with the beta test, we launched a dynamic lighting video contest to see how builders leverage the much-anticipated feature – for both aesthetic and interactive purposes. We collected roughly 200 submissions, all of which are now on display on the contest website and waiting for you to show some love with your votes.

You can cast a vote for up to five entries. The voting period lasts through Monday, April 29th at 4:00 pm PT, so watch as many as you can and choose your favorites wisely. Don’t forget to leave comments of support, too.

Lights On! Win a Contest While You Test Dynamic Lighting

For the last five or so days, we’ve had dynamic lighting enabled on a small test environment. Today, we moved the feature over to the more robust GameTest1 environment so more builders can experiment with it simultaneously. While it’s news enough that you can play with dynamic lighting today, we’ve also launched a dynamic lighting video contest to let you future masters of light and darkness show your prowess!

You have until Thursday, April 25th at 11:59 p.m. PT to create something incredible using dynamic lighting, capture 30 to 60 seconds of footage of it, and submit your video. You can either build something brand new for the express purpose of showing off the beauty of dynamic lighting, or modify one of your existing places/games to illustrate the before-and-after results. Regardless of the avenue you pursue, the content you submit must be your own. You can submit your entry and see the complete instructions/timeline here.
