ROBLOX Hosting a Hackathon at Game Conference 2012

RGC 2012 Hackathon LogoDo you consider yourself an elite ROBLOX game designer? Do your friends secretly marvel at your architectural competence and scripting prowess? Can you produce under the pressure of limited time? If so, we invite you to bring your laptop to ROBLOX Game Conference 2012 and join us for a continuous, all-day Hackathon.

The ROBLOX Game Conference 2012 Hackathon will let attendees take a break from the festivities and enjoy a session of ROBLOX creation. Every 20 or so minutes, a ROBLOX developer will unveil a new puzzle, challenging users to complete it in a given period of time. While we can’t give away any specifics, we’ll be asking competitors to do things like create a new GUI (graphic user interface) or game effect, script a specific sequence of behaviors, solve programming and math puzzles, and take advantage of a ROBLOX feature that’s not commonly used.

Dagger of Shattered DimensionsOur head gear programmer Deepak Chandrasekaran explains the steps that went into creating The Dagger of Shattered Dimensions.

The ROBLOX creative team meets regularly to plan new items for publication in the Catalog. Recently they were inspired to create an Arabian Nights collection which included a Flying Magic Carpet, Arabian Knight Scimitar, Magic LampDesert King hat, and the technically advanced Dagger of Shattered Dimensions. Once ideas have been selected, our team of 3D artists creates the item and hat models using Maya, Blender and 3DS Max.  The models are then delivered to the gear programmers.

ROBLOX Game Conference 2012 – save the date

Date: Saturday July 14, 2012
Location: Santa Clara Convention Center

Rally 2011 SpeakersLast year’s ROBLOX Game Conference – ROBLOX Rally 2011 – had one thousand attendees. We would like to double (or more) the number of users attending this year. We are announcing the event as early as possible so users have time to make summer travel plans. This year’s event will be similar in format to ROBLOX Rally 2011, with more of everything that was great – more demos, more computers, more learning, more ROBLOX. We are tentatively calling the event “ROBLOX Game Conference 2012″ but will finalize the name when tickets go on sale soon.

The Conference will be held on Saturday July 14, 2012 at the Santa Clara Convention Center, conveniently located near dozens of hotels and next to the themed amusement park Great America. We will explore discount Great America tickets for those who wish to visit the day after the conference.
